What is Digital Rupee (e₹)?

Digital Rupee, also known as CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency), is legal tender issued by the RBI. It holds the same value as physical cash but exists in digital form inside your mobile e₹ wallet. Just like the notes in your pocket, e₹ is fully valid and secure.

Why e₹ Is Different

Unlike UPI, NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS, which transfer money from your bank account, e₹ is money itself. When you pay using e₹, the amount moves directly from your wallet to the receiver’s wallet. There’s no traditional bank processing in between. It’s fast, direct, and seamless.

Key Features of e₹

  • It’s a sovereign currency backed by the Government of India.
  • Recorded as a liability on RBI’s balance sheet, completely reliable.
  • Accepted by individuals, shops, businesses, and government entities.
  • Can be converted to cash or transferred to your bank account anytime.
  • Zero charges for sending or receiving money.

Who Can Use e₹?

Anyone with the e₹ app can use it. The wallet works like a digital purse on your smartphone and is available on both Android and iOS devices.

How to Download SBI’s e₹ App

SBI customers need to download the “eRupee App by SBI” from the app store. It is offered by the State Bank of India. Once installed, the app provides step-by-step on-screen instructions to get started.
