In a move that comes as a breather for taxpayers, the Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year 2025-26 by one more day. The initial cut-off date of July 31, 2025, was earlier shifted to September 15, 2025. Now, taxpayers will have until September 16, 2025 to complete their filings.

Why the Extension Was Given

The extension was prompted by technical glitches that many taxpayers faced while trying to file their returns on the official e-filing portal, incometax.gov.in. Heavy traffic on the platform, combined with last-minute rush, caused disruptions that made the filing process difficult for several users.

In its official announcement on X (formerly Twitter), the department said:
"KIND ATTENTION TAXPAYERS! The due date for filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, originally due on 31st July 2025, was extended to 15th September 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025."

The post further mentioned, "To enable changes in the utilities, the e- filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 02:30 AM on 16th September 2025."

Surge in ITR Filings and Advance Tax Payments

According to official data, more than 7 crore ITRs were filed by Monday evening, just before the earlier deadline. However, the rush to meet the cut-off date coincided with the due date for the second quarterly installment of advance tax, which led to additional stress on the e-filing system.

Technical Glitches and User Complaints

Many taxpayers reported persistent difficulties in uploading returns and making payments. The Income Tax Department acknowledged the complaints and issued guidance for users struggling with access issues.

On X, it posted:

"Having difficulty accessing the Income Tax e-Filing Portal? Sometimes, access difficulties with the Income Tax e-Filing Portal may arise due to local system/browser settings. These simple steps often help resolve such issues."

Despite these suggestions, users continued to experience disruptions. The department assured taxpayers that the portal was functional and recommended clearing browser cache or trying different browsers. It also urged users facing continued issues to write to orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in with details of their problems.

What This Means for Taxpayers

The one-day extension offers last-minute filers a small but valuable window to complete their ITR submissions without penalty. However, the situation highlights the challenges of handling high volumes of users on the e-filing portal during peak deadlines.

Taxpayers are advised not to wait until the very last day to avoid technical hiccups and to ensure a smoother filing experience.
