Under the initiative, highway users will receive early warnings on their mobile phones as they approach accident-prone stretches, fog-heavy spots, stray-animal zones or areas with sudden diversions. The alerts will be delivered through SMS, WhatsApp and priority calls, allowing travellers to adjust their speed and driving behaviour well before they reach any hazardous location.

Integrated With NHAI’s Digital Platforms

The project will be introduced in phases and linked with NHAI’s existing digital ecosystem, including the Rajmargyatra mobile app and the 1033 emergency helpline. This integration is expected to create a more responsive system where commuters can obtain reliable information without additional effort.

No Additional Roadside Hardware Needed

The automated system works using existing telecom towers, enabling faster deployment across various regions. It will be available for all Jio users travelling on or near national highways. With Jio’s network strength and a subscriber base of over 500 million, the reach of these alerts will span a significant portion of India’s highway traffic.

Leadership Voices Support

According to NHAI Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav, “This initiative marks an important step forward in providing timely and reliable information to commuters, enabling them to make informed decisions and adopt safer driving practices well in advance.” Reliance Jio President Mr Jyotindra Thacker noted that the solution leverages the telecom network’s wide coverage to deliver high-impact safety communication at scale.

Pilot Rollout And Future Expansion

The initial phase will be tested under selected NHAI regional offices to refine risk-zone mapping and alert triggers. The project will fully adhere to regulatory and data-protection norms. NHAI also plans to collaborate with other telecom service providers to extend the benefits to a wider user base, strengthening the long-term vision of safer and smarter highway mobility.
