The Ministry of Petroleum has clarified that petrol and diesel supplies remain sufficient at retail outlets across the country. Authorities have urged consumers not to panic or attempt to store fuel at home, as it can create serious safety hazards.

Government Issues Safety Warning

Petrol and diesel are highly flammable fuels and must be handled with care. Storing them in plastic bottles, cans or open containers can increase the risk of fire accidents and other dangerous situations.

In a message shared on X, the ministry said, “Petrol and diesel are readily available in adequate amounts at retail locations nationwide. Consumers are urged not to buy or store fuel in open or unsuitable containers, as this presents serious safety concerns.”

Officials stressed that fuel should only be purchased for immediate vehicle use and should not be transported or stored in unsafe containers.

Strict Instructions for Petrol Pumps

Petrol pump operators have also been instructed to strictly follow all safety guidelines while dispensing fuel. Retail outlets have been warned not to sell petrol or diesel in bottles, plastic cans or other unsuitable containers.

The ministry further stated, “Reports have indicated that petrol was being sold in open containers at a retail outlet in Tamil Nadu, which is both unsafe and improper.”

Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against any petrol pump found violating safety regulations.

Action Taken After Chennai Incident

A recent incident at a petrol station in Chennai highlighted the seriousness of the issue. According to reports, petrol was being dispensed into loose containers at the outlet. After the violation came to light, the petrol pump was suspended immediately for failing to follow safety norms.

Oil Companies Raise Concern Over Panic Buying

Fuel companies have also observed an unusual rise in customers demanding petrol in bottles and other containers. Many of these requests appear to be driven by panic buying amid fears of a possible supply disruption.

Indian Oil has instructed its outlets not to sell petrol in bottles, plastic cans or similar containers. Company officials said that several incidents have recently been reported where customers arrived at fuel stations asking for petrol in unsafe containers due to market rumours.

Global Developments Fuel Anxiety

The anxiety among consumers has largely been linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Conflicts in the region can affect global crude oil production and supply routes, which sometimes leads to uncertainty in energy markets.

However, authorities have emphasised that petrol and diesel supplies within India remain stable and there is no immediate reason for panic buying.

Government Urges Calm

Officials have advised the public to remain calm and follow safety rules while purchasing fuel. Buying excessive fuel or storing it at home can create serious risks and disrupt normal supply at petrol pumps.

By avoiding panic buying and following proper safety practices, consumers can help ensure smooth fuel availability and prevent unnecessary hazards.
