Motherhood brings joy, but it also comes with financial and health challenges. To ease this journey, the Central Government runs the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, a maternity benefit scheme designed to support pregnant women and new mothers with direct financial assistance.

Launched in 2010 and renamed in 2017, the scheme focuses on improving maternal and child health. It encourages proper nutrition, timely medical care, and a positive outlook toward the birth of a girl child.

How Much Financial Support Is Provided?

  • Under the scheme, a woman receives Rs 5,000 during her first pregnancy.
  • Rs 3,000 is given after pregnancy registration.
  • Rs 2,000 is released after the child’s birth registration.

If a woman gives birth to a daughter in her second pregnancy, she is eligible for an additional Rs 6,000. The money is directly transferred to the beneficiary’s Aadhaar linked bank or post office account through Direct Benefit Transfer. The assistance is meant to help mothers arrange nutritious food and basic care for themselves and their newborns.

Who Can Apply?

To receive benefits under PMMVY, certain conditions must be met:

  • The woman must be at least 19 years old.
  • The family’s annual income should be below Rs 8 lakh.
  • Women holding an MNREGA job card or receiving benefits under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi are eligible.
  • Those with an e-Shram card, BPL card, or certified disability can also apply.
  • Applications must be submitted within 270 days of the child’s birth. Missing this deadline means losing the benefit.

How to Apply?

Women can apply online by visiting the official PMMVY portal and uploading required documents such as Aadhaar card, bank passbook, and MCP card.

Offline applications can be submitted at the nearest Anganwadi centre or government health centre. Separate forms are available for each installment. The process has been simplified recently to ensure that more women can access the support without complications. A helpline is also available to resolve any issues during the application process.

A Scheme Making a Real Difference

So far, more than 4 crore women across India have received at least one installment under this scheme. The government has disbursed over Rs 19,000 crore to beneficiaries. PMMVY operates under the “Samarthya” sub scheme of Mission Shakti and plays a vital role in strengthening maternal and child health across the country.

Beyond financial aid, the scheme promotes healthier pregnancies, safer deliveries, and better nutrition for mothers and babies. For many families, this support arrives at just the right time, offering both relief and reassurance during one of life’s most important phases.
