The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) has shared a new update on the Rs 2,000 banknotes that were withdrawn from circulation in May 2023. Once introduced after demonetisation to boost liquidity, the high-value currency has almost vanished from the system, with only a fraction still remaining.

Rs 2,000 Notes Near Complete Return

According to RBI data, the total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation has dropped sharply from Rs 3.56 lakh crore (as of May 19, 2023) to just Rs 5,956 crore by August 31, 2025. This means that 98.33% of the withdrawn notes have already been returned.

Exchange and Deposit Facility Still Available

The RBI clarified that individuals can still exchange or deposit the remaining Rs 2,000 notes at its 19 regional issue offices. Since October 9, 2023, these offices have also been accepting deposits of the notes directly into bank accounts.

Sending Notes via India Post

Rs 2,000 Notes Still Legal Tender

While the printing and circulation of new Rs 2,000 notes has stopped, the RBI has confirmed that the currency remains legal tender, meaning it is still valid for transactions until further notice.
