Air India Unveils Premium Cabins, New Jets and Luxury Lounges
India’s flagship carrier Air India is stepping into a sharper, more premium avatar. Backed by the Tata Group, the airline is revamping its fleet, upgrading onboard experience, and building world-class lounges to win over high-paying travellers and boost profitability.
A fresh start for older aircraft
Air India is giving its ageing fleet a major makeover. Eight Boeing 787-8 planes will soon fly with completely redesigned interiors. Expect improved seating, better layouts, and a more comfortable cabin vibe. The airline is investing nearly ₹3,600 crore to fix past concerns around seat quality and overall experience. Alongside this, upgrades are also underway for Boeing 777 aircraft.
Business Class gets a luxury upgrade
The biggest transformation is in Business Class. New cabins now feature private suites with sliding doors, dedicated storage areas, modern seat controls, and thoughtful touches like adjustable armrests and bottle holders. The aim is simple, make long-haul journeys feel far more relaxed and premium.
Expanding fleet and global lounges
Air India is also strengthening its international presence by adding around six new wide-body aircraft this year. To match the upgraded in-flight experience, the airline is rolling out premium lounges across key global hubs like San Francisco and New York. Its first revamped lounge already opened in Delhi earlier this year.
These lounges promise plush seating, high-quality dining, and a calm space to unwind before flights, features designed to appeal strongly to business and first-class travellers.
Big focus on premium travellers
The strategy is clear: attract premium passengers who pay higher fares. Air India believes that strong revenue from Business and First Class can help balance costs and keep Economy Class tickets competitive.
With these upgrades, the airline is not just improving comfort, it’s repositioning itself as a serious global player in premium air travel.
