ITR Filing Done? Here’s Why ITR-V Must Be Verified in 30 Days

Filing your income tax return is just the first step, what truly completes the process is verification. Miss that, and your return is treated as if it was never filed. That’s where the ITR-V form steps in, playing a crucial role in making your submission legally valid.

Why ITR-V Matters

ITR-V, short for Income Tax Return Verification, is a simple one-page document that confirms the details you submitted online are correct. It also acts as your declaration of responsibility for the information provided. If you don’t verify your return, either digitally or physically, it won’t be accepted by the Income Tax Department.

Digital vs Physical Verification

Most taxpayers today prefer quick digital methods like Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or digital signatures. These options complete verification instantly, with no paperwork involved.

However, physical submission is still relevant for some. If your mobile number isn’t linked to Aadhaar, or you don’t have access to digital verification, you’ll need to send the signed ITR-V form manually. Many senior citizens also opt for this traditional route. On the other hand, audited businesses and professionals must use digital signatures, so they’re exempt from sending physical forms.

The 30-Day Deadline You Can’t Ignore

Earlier, taxpayers had up to 120 days to verify their returns. That window has now been reduced to just 30 days. If you don’t verify within this period, your return becomes invalid, meaning you may have to file it all over again, possibly with penalties.

How to Send ITR-V the Right Way

If you’re going the offline route, a few steps are essential. Download the ITR-V from the official portal, it’s password-protected, so you’ll need your PAN and date of birth to open it.

Print the form clearly and sign it using a blue ink pen within the designated box. Avoid common mistakes like unclear prints or signatures outside the box.

Also, note this carefully: courier services are not accepted. You must send the form via ordinary post or speed post to the Centralized Processing Centre in Bengaluru (PIN: 560500).

A small delay or oversight in verifying your ITR can undo all your effort. Whether you choose digital or physical verification, acting within the 30-day window is key. Get this final step right, and your tax filing process is truly complete.
