1 kitchen appliance should never be left plugged in
Kitchen appliances can be dangerous, causing a major fire hazard in your home. There's a huge range of appliances you might have in your kitchen including a kettle, microwave, airfryer, blender or even coffee machine.
It's likely you don't think twice on the day to day about any of them and how safe they are. Better Homes and Gardens has shared that with certain appliances, you should be unplugging them as soon as you've used them to avoid any hazards. Whether you're going on holiday or just going out to work for the day, you should start getting into the habit of unplugging major appliances.
While some appliances (like your television or refrigerator) can stay plugged in all the time, there are others you should be sure to unplug before you leave the house, Better Homes and Gardens says.
It says there's one appliance in particular that you should take extra care with - electric kettles.
"Any appliance designed to create heat in a concentrated area (like curling irons and space heaters) can be a fire risk.
"Because electric kettles are made to bring water to a boil very quickly, there is a small risk of the appliance malfunctioning or overheating when you're not home, leading to a kitchen fire," it warns.
But this is not the only one you should take extra caution with as toaster and air fryers can also be dangerous.
Dry bread crumbs and drops of oil can collect on top of their heating mechanisms making toasters and air fryers another fire hazard in your home.
"One of the best ways to minimize risk is to frequently clean the toaster (including the crumb collector!) and air fryer.
"Another smart idea is to get into the habit of unplugging the toaster as soon as you're done using it, and add it to the items you double check before you leave the house," Better Homes and Gardens adds.
By ensuring to unplug your appliances - which will take you just seconds - you'll be able to have peace of mind that your home is safe.
