11 more stubble burning cases reported in Punjab

Bathinda: Eleven crop residue burning events were reported across Punjab on Wednesday, taking the total count so far this season to 176 as four districts reported stubble burning cases in the last 24 hours, with a maximum of five cases registered in Amritsar.

Against 176 farm fire cases till Oct 15 in the ongoing season, 1,113 cases were reported till the day in 2024, while 1,388 were reported in the corresponding period in 2023.

As per the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) dashboard for stubble burning, only 16.20% of paddy harvesting has been done till Oct 14.

Out of the 176 stubble burning cases, 73 were reported from Amritsar district; 51 from Tarn Taran; 11 from Patiala; six from Ferozepur; five each from Barnala, Kapurthala, and Sangrur; four from Malerkotla; three from Gurdaspur; two each from Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, and SAS Nagar; and one each from Bathinda, Faridkot, Fazilka, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Mansa, and S B S Nagar.

In all, 19 of the 23 districts of the state have now reported one or more farm fire cases in the ongoing season.

Going by the spurt in stubble burning cases, three more FIRs were registered on Tuesday, raising the count to 81. Also, seven more red entries were made in land records, taking the count to 50, and Rs 3.70 lakh environmental compensation was imposed against the violators, out of which Rs 2.90 lakh was recovered.

The FIRs were filed under Section 223 of the BNS (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).

As per the Consortium for Research on Agroecosystem Monitoring and Modeling from Space (CREAMS), 136 stubble burning cases were recorded in six states on Wednesday, raising the total count so far this season to 688, with 271 cases from UP, 176 from Punjab, 138 from Madhya Pradesh, 75 from Rajasthan, 25 from Haryana, and three from Delhi.
