Air Pollution in Delhi Surges on Diwali: AQI Reaches ‘Severe’ Levels

Delhiites faced another harsh reality this Diwali morning as air pollution levels soared, choking the city with smog. The Air Quality Index (AQI) at India Gate hit 347, placing it firmly in the ‘severe’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Post-Firework Woes Expected

Authorities have warned that pollution may worsen due to residual post-Diwali fireworks and stagnant weather conditions, making the air increasingly unsafe.

GRAP II Measures Activated

Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP II) came into effect Sunday evening after the air quality turned ‘very poor’. Stage I measures had already been in place since October 14. On Sunday night, 24 out of 38 monitoring stations recorded ‘very poor’ air quality, signaling the city’s growing crisis.

Weather Keeps Pollution Lingering

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that this trend will continue throughout the week, with AQI levels expected to remain in the ‘severe’ bracket immediately after Diwali, especially on Tuesday. Vulnerable groups like children and the elderly are particularly at risk.

Authorities on High Alert

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has directed all implementing agencies to maintain strict vigilance. Focus areas include dust mitigation and strict compliance with timelines outlined in the regional air pollution policy.

Green Crackers, Limited Relief

The spike comes despite the Supreme Court’s recent green cracker directive, allowing limited use in Delhi-NCR. The permitted hours are 6–7 am and 8–10 pm, with sales restricted to October 18–20. Experts warn that even this limited usage may not prevent the air quality from remaining hazardous.
