All the jockeys suspended at Cheltenham Festival including four bans in one race
Multiple jockeys have received suspensions at the Cheltenham Festival. Several were to do with the controversy before the opening race of day two, which prompted accusations of abuse from Irish amateur Declan Queally. This year's Festival has proved as popular as ever.
Though it hasn't been without controversy this week, particularly due to Queally accusing fellow rider Nico de Boinville of abusing him before the start of the Turners' Novices' Hurdle on Wednesday - a dispute which has since been put to bed. Riding I'll Sort That, Queally became embroiled in a fracas that included De Boinville following a series of false starts prior to the race that resulted in several jockeys competing for position at the tape for a starting spot. Alongside Jack Kennedy (Ballyfad), Danny Gilligan (Skylight Hustle) and Darragh O'Keeffe (Walks in June), Queally was suspended.
The four riders are said to have not approached the tape at a walk and by not doing so, caused a false start that resulted in a standing start. That followed two suspensions being handed out on the opening day. Gilligan had also been in hot water for the same offence of misconduct at the start whilst riding Will Do, and Conor Stone-Walsh was punished for careless riding aboard Iceberg Theory.
Queally's allegations of suffering abuse led to an enquiry being convened, with the Irishman and De Boinville providing testimony to the stewards, who have subsequently adjourned to gather additional evidence. Speaking to ITV Racing following the incident, Queally said: "Being abused by an English rider, Nico de Boinville, not very nice.
"I am an amateur, coming over here and riding in front of my kids. Horrific." The amateur jockey later added: "The BHA are dealing with it, so we'll just go from there. It was heated down there, it was sports people, there can be a lot of effing and blinding and you know, that's what happens in sports, so we'll go from there, we'll see what the BHA say."
De Boinville - who finished second in the race - was immediately questioned about the allegations, to which he responded: "Maybe he should look in the mirror." De Boinville has subsequently appeared on BBC 5 Live and refuted making any racial remark towards his rival. He said: "It's an ongoing investigation.
"The stewards are gathering all the evidence they can from all the video footage. From my point of view I deny all the allegations against me and I can categorically say that there wasn't any racial slurs or anything like that. Let it play out." However, during ITV's coverage of Thursday's racing, Queally and De Boinville shook hands to end the contentious situation.
Queally told ITV: "All sorted, just a heat of the moment battle, all is forgiven and best of luck to Nico in the future." De Boinville then added: "Very much so, I appreciate Declan, wish him all the best and big thanks to Davy Russell for sorting this out."
