Ayodhya mosque trust Secretary: Building mosque to name it after Babur appears politically motivated, defeats spirit of faith
LUCKNOW: Indo-Islamic cultural foundation (IICF), looking after the construction of the mosque mandated by the Supreme Court in the Ram Janambhoomi - Babri Masjid case judgement, has strongly criticized the suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir ’s decision of building a mosque to name it after Babur in Beldanga of Murshidabad district in West Bengal.
Secretary of the foundation Athar Husain called it a ‘politically’ motivated act and defeats the sacred purpose of building a place of worship.

Husain said the intention to construct a mosque is very good, sacred and sacrosanct, and there is nothing wrong with it. “But when you deliberately link it to the politics of the past and choose a name that carries decades of controversy, it no longer serves the purpose of faith demands,” he added.
Husain stated, that the basic pillar of Islam is ‘taqwa’ — god-consciousness and purity of belief. “Performing namaz is among the most important acts for a believer, but that purity is lost the moment politics enters the mosque,” he stressed, adding that there must be absolutely no space for political symbolism in a house of Allah.
Pointing to the Supreme Court’s historic Ayodhya verdict of November 9, 2019, which settled the decades-old dispute by allotting the original site for a Ram temple and five acres in Dhannipur village to the UP Sunni Central Waqf Board for a new mosque, Husain said the chapter is closed. “Anything done now in the name of ‘Babri Masjid’ is purely politics.”
The IICF secretary urged MLA Kabir to reconsider the name of the mosque. “You carry the beautiful name of Sant Kabir — the great saint of this land, who always preached Hindu-Muslim unity and upliftment of the downtrodden, exactly what Islam teaches. If you truly want to build a mosque with your own resources, name it ‘Kabir Masjid’ or 'Hinudstani Masjid' or after Murshidabad itself . It would send a message of harmony, not division. In fact the initiative could have united people across religious lines. In India’s secular framework, the state cannot fund such projects, but voluntary contributions from diverse communities would have flowed in."
Husain warned that clinging to a controversial historical name will only polarise communities and prevent contributions that would otherwise flow across religious lines. “A mosque must rise only on taqwa, not on politics. Kabir’s remarks have already led to his expulsion from the TMC, ” concluded Husain.
Meanwhile reacting to the controversy, UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya siad,"This is nothing but TMC’s drama. If a single stone is laid, the BJP government will uproot the foundation stones as soon as we come to power in West Bengal."
