Badi Patan Devi temple development plan scaled down

Patna: The proposed plan to develop the Badi Patan Devi temple in Patna City as a major tourist destination has been scaled down due to technical constraints.

While the earlier plan envisaged a grand entrance gate on Ashok Rajpath, a circumambulatory (parikrama) pathway and multiple parking facilities, the project has now been limited to the construction of a toilet complex and a parking facility.

Initially, a budget of around Rs7.8 crore was approved for the development. However, following revisions, the project cost has been reduced to about Rs1 crore. The work is being executed by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation Limited (BSTDC).

Located in the heart of Patna City, the ancient Badi Patan Devi temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is believed to be the site where the right thigh of Goddess Sati fell, making it an important Shakti Peetha.

A BSTDC official said the original proposal, prepared in 2024, included two multilevel parking facilities for about 150 vehicles — one each at the Ashok Rajpath and Shershah Road entrances — a nearly 2-km-long parikrama path around the temple, and the construction of gates at both entry points. The plan also proposed converting the existing toilet facility into a modern amenities complex with rooms and a hall for visitors.

However, the comprehensive plan was dropped due to issues such as land unavailability and congestion in the densely populated area. At present, construction of a G+2 toilet building near the temple is underway at an estimated cost of over Rs70 lakh.

The official added that a multilevel parking facility for over 150 vehicles is being constructed on Ashok Rajpath by the tourism department, while the parking project on Shershah Road was dropped. Renovation work of the temple itself is being carried out separately by the local engineering office.
