BBC Countryfile host says 'I'm ashamed to admit it' as she makes candid confession
A beloved Countryfile host made a candid confession in the latest instalment, admitting she was "ashamed".
The beloved BBC show returned to screens on Sunday evening (March 1) for another episode. During the instalment, with the new salmon-fishing season about to open on the River Tweed, Sammi Kinghorn and Matt Baker followed the final preparations before the first cast of the year.
They met the people keeping the river's salmon-fishing traditions alive - from the boatmen returning to the water after winter to the rod makers and tweed weavers hard at work behind the scenes.
The area was a familiar place to Sammi, who grew up and spent her childhood near there. She said: "It's very close to my heart. I was brought up really close to here." Matt then told her: "Honestly you are so fortunate to have grown up with a landscape like this!"
However, Sammi went on to make a shock confession during the programme. Looking out at the gorgeous scenery and rivers, she said: "I'm ashamed to admit that, even though I'm a local and I know about these rivers I know very little about fishing and even less about how to make a fishing rod."
Sammi then went and met with Neil Fox, an avid fly fisherman who makes fishing rods. While at his old tweed mill by the river, Sammi attempted to make her own rod with the help of Neil.
Sammi joined the Countryfile team back in 2023 and she quickly became a firm favourite with viewers. The TV star, who is also a world champion wheelchair racer, grew up on a farm in Scotland with her parents Neil and Elaine, and her brother.
Despite having fond memories of her childhood, she has spoken about a life-changing event when she was just 14 years old. Unaware that Sammi had climbed onto some machinery, her dad Neil lowered a forklift bucket he'd been using to clear snow, which landed on top of her.
Speaking to the Daily Mail last year, Sammi said she remembers feeling "pressure" on her neck and initially thought her dad was "joking" but had "gone a bit too far".
The presenter recounted the harrowing moment she started "screaming," revealing that her back began "popping" and suddenly her "head was in [her] crotch". Sammi described being "crushed right down" into a "tiny ball".
Upon regaining consciousness, Sammi realised she couldn't feel her legs, although she retained movement in them, before collapsing onto compacted snow. She experienced her legs "pulsing" and "twitching," marking the last time she had sensation in them.
