Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) on Tuesday signed an agreement with Singapore-based Surbana Jurong , a consultancy firm, to prepare a comprehensive master plan for the proposed Bhubaneswar New City, a major urban expansion project aimed at shaping the capital’s future growth.

Planned over nearly 800 acres across the mouzas of Gothapatna, Malipada and Dasapur, the project is being envisioned as a multi-economic growth zone in line with the state’s long-term development vision of Vikshit Odisha 2036.

Officials said the proposed new city will be developed as a transit-oriented urban hub with emphasis on efficient public transport, reduced travel time and integrated mixed land use. The plan also seeks to ensure housing for all through a range of affordable and inclusive residential options for different income groups.

BDA vice-chairman Chanchal Rana said the city will have state-of-the-art infrastructure, including MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) facilities, plug-and-play innovation hubs and advanced data management centres.

He further said the project will also focus on creative placemaking through central forest parks, gateway plazas and vibrant public spaces to improve community interaction and urban liveability.

According to officials, the new city will incorporate smart and green infrastructure solutions to improve climate resilience, environmental sustainability and overall quality of life. The BDA has been designated as the nodal agency for implementation of the project.

Once completed, the new city is expected to guide the planned expansion of Bhubaneswar, check unregulated urban sprawl and strengthen urban infrastructure in and around the capital region.

Urban planner Dipu Nanda said the proposed plan appeared promising and could help place Bhubaneswar among the country’s leading metropolitan centres. “The project execution should be smooth and timely,” he added.

Officials said the project is also expected to generate employment, attract investment and promote inclusive growth by ensuring access to affordable housing and essential community facilities for all sections of society.
