Bengaluru Tragedy: Son Stabs Retired Navy Captain and Dentist Mother After Family Dispute
In a shocking case that has stunned residents of Vignan Nagar in east Bengaluru, a 33-year-old man allegedly murdered his own parents in a brutal attack on Wednesday morning. The victims - Naveen Chandra Bhat, 60, a retired Indian Navy captain, and his wife Dr Shyamala Bhat, 55, a practising dentist - were found with fatal stab wounds inside their home in the Adarsh Vista apartment complex.
According to police, the accused, identified as Rohan Chandra Bhat, a software engineer, attacked his parents around 7:30 am at their residence over what authorities described as a family dispute. Officers said Rohan repeatedly stabbed both victims with a kitchen knife, causing severe injuries. Despite being rushed to a nearby private hospital, the couple was pronounced dead by 8:15 am.
Following the violent incident, a neighbour - Dr Madhavi Nair, a doctor at a private hospital and resident of the same apartment complex - filed a complaint with the HAL Police Station, prompting officials to register a murder case against Rohan. Police quickly arrested the suspect and produced him before the jurisdictional court.
Investigators say the exact motive behind the killings has not yet been established, and are continuing to gather evidence and question the accused. While preliminary reports point to a domestic disagreement as the trigger, police have not ruled out other factors pending further inquiry.
Residents described the upscale gated community as normally quiet, with many in shock over the violence. Authorities confirmed that the bodies of the deceased have been shifted to Bowring Hospital mortuary, and the couple’s daughter - who lives in the United States - has been informed and is expected to arrive in Bengaluru soon, after which post-mortem examinations will be conducted, officials said.
The tragic episode has brought renewed attention to family conflicts and mental health issues in urban Indian households, especially within high-pressure environments - but investigators are focusing on piecing together the exact sequence of events that led to the brutal double murder.
