The best supermarket chocolate spread in the UK has been named - and it's not Aldi. Last month, Which? published the results of a blind taste test looking at Nutella and its own-brand equivalents across the major supermarkets. The consumer champion gathered sixty testers to sample 11 hazelnut spreads, including Nutella, seeking to settle the debate on whether the famous Ferrero-produced kitchen staple is the best.

Participants rated them based on flavour, aroma, appearance and texture, and identified their likes and dislikes from product to product. After that, Which? produced an overall score heavily weighted on flavour (50%) as well as aroma (20%), appearance (15%), and texture (15%).

The winner, by a narrow margin, was Waitrose Essential Hazelnut Chocolate Spread, the most expensive among supermarket own-label products.

It bagged a strong 82% score, with Which? saying almost three-quarters of their tasters believed the "strength of both the chocolate and the hazelnut flavour was spot on", with a similar proportion praising its consistency.

An even higher proportion said the spread was perfectly sweet, according to the outlet.

Nutella Hazelnut & Chocolate spread was a close second with an 81% score, with over three-quarters of testers saying they enjoyed its satisfying chocolatey flavour.

However, there were some reservations about the thickness of the spread, with some suggesting it was too stodgy.

Nevertheless, it saw off most supermarket rivals. The rest of the top five included Tesco Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (also 81%), Asda Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (80%) and Lidl Choco Nussa Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (80%).

Meanwhile, Aldi Nutoka Hazelnut Chocolate Spread, which has the same price point as Tesco's 3rd-place offering, came 11th with a score of 62%.

Which said the spread divided opinion and was the least liked overall, with some saying the nutty taste wasn't strong enough, and a third saying it was overly sweet and not chocolatey enough.
