Bhubaneswar at 9.2°C; coldest January day in 23 years

Newspoint
Bhubaneswar: Coldwave condition continued in the city on Saturday as it recorded 9.2°C, the coldest day in Jan in 23 years. On Wednesday, mercury dipped to 10.2°C in the city and 9.4°C for the two subsequent days.

“The coldwave is unusual. It is primarily due to a low pressure system left stationary over the Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast for 3 to 4 days. It influenced continuous inflow of dry and cold north Katabatic wind from the Himalayan foothills region towards Odisha and supported drop in temperature appreciably in the state,” said Sarat Sahu, former director of regional IMD centre. He said the system was likely to cross the Sri Lanka coast as depression and support change in wind pattern and rise in mercury level.

Head of regional IMD centre Manorama Mohanty said the state experienced good cold wave condition this year compared to last 3 to 4 years. On Saturday, the temperature was below 10°C at 28 places, according to an IMD report. Mercury at seven places plummeted to 6°C or below. Hill station G Udayagiri was the coldest in the state at 3.2°C. Rourkela recorded 4.1°C after 3.6°C on Friday. Cuttack at 9°C saw a 4.5°C drop from normal. Angul at 6°C, recorded the day's highest of 7.6°C drop compared to normal. Minimum temperature at Phulbani stood at 6°C.

IMD’s latest forecast said cold wave condition would continue in parts of the state for next two days, even as night temperature would rise by 2°C to 3°C during the period. IMD issued cold wave warning for Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda and Angul districts on Sunday. On Monday coldwave would continue in three districts, an IMD bulletin said.
