Brits have been advised to check their curtains after it was revealed that many households are losing heat. Heating homes has become more expensive, and many Brits will need to be more aware of their energy usage this winter as they try to keep their household bills to a minimum. There are many ways to make sure you get the most out of your heating, from controlling the temperature to making sure any holes in walls or between floorboards are covered up and mended.

However, there is one thing to look out for in your curtains to ensure heat isn't escaping. Previously, money expert Martin Lewis revealed that curtains should be drawn before the sun sets to help retain any heat your home has absorbed from the sunlight that day. However, ensure you have the right curtains to retain heat. Curtains are used for more than just privacy when the sun goes down. A good set of curtains can actually drastically change the effectiveness of your heating.

The Energy Saving Trust reports that around 18% of a home's heat loss escapes through windows. That is a significant amount when you want your heating to do as much as it can without using it too much.

What is the solution? A good set of curtains. Thermal curtains are a great way to retain warmth in your home. These types of curtains are made of multiple layers of fabric and are often lined with insulating materials, such as foam.

Essentially, they act like a double-glazed window, keeping in more heat than thinner curtains.

You can check if you have thermal curtains by simply looking at their label to see what they are made of.

You might think you have lovely, thick curtains, but they might not be insulating enough. Thermal curtains can be bought online for around £20.

This is significantly higher than the cheapest curtains available. Sometimes, you get curtains for as little as £10 or below. But curtains are an investment, and they can help you save money down the line.

Not only do they keep your home warm during winter, but these insulated curtains can also prevent excess heat from entering your home in summer. This past summer was record-breakingin terms of high temperatures, and many Brits felt the pinch in their energy bills due to the constant use of fans to stay cool.
