Handed an Emmy Award for his work on Maxwell Smart, Private Eye in 1968, the star worked on almost 400 projects over his career, including directing WW2 sitcom Hogan's Heroes.

Bruce was also grandfather to actress Rachel Bilson, who shot to fame on The OC and in CW series Hart of Dixie. He died peacefully at home, his daughter Julie Bilson Ahlberg told The Hollywood Reporter.

Born to a showbiz family including screenwriter Hattie and producer George, Bruce carried on the trend with his own children, who also went on to work in Hollywood. Both his son Danny and daughter Julie work as film producers.

He was married twice - first to Mona Weichman from 1955 until 1976, and then to Renne Jarrett from 1981 until his death.
