Chaos in Punjab Assembly as Opposition Calls for Alcohol Test of CM Bhagwant Mann
A special one-day session of the Punjab Assembly to mark Labour Day on Friday was overshadowed by intense political drama, sharp allegations, and a noisy walkout by the Opposition.
What began as a tribute to the working class quickly escalated into chaos after Opposition MLAs demanded an alcohol test for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann , alleging that he attended the House under the influence of alcohol. The demand was firmly rejected by Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.
Heated exchange triggers controversy
The trouble began when Chief Minister Mann objected to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira for allegedly using a mobile phone during the proceedings. Khaira hit back, referring to Mann’s wife being present in the visitors’ gallery during an earlier session, escalating tensions inside the House.
During the verbal spat, Mann responded sharply, saying, “Ae bakwas karda, Speaker Sahib” (he talks nonsense, Speaker Sir), directed at Khaira.
Allegations of intoxication spark uproar
As the argument intensified, Khaira went a step further and accused the Chief Minister of attending the Assembly under the influence of alcohol. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa backed the charge and demanded that all MLAs, including the Chief Minister, undergo an alcohol meter test to clear the air.
The Shiromani Akali Dal also joined the attack, sharing Assembly video clips and calling it “shameful” if Mann had appeared in the House after consuming alcohol. The party went on to demand a public dope test to “bring out the truth.”
Walkout by Congress
With tempers running high, Congress MLAs staged a walkout from the Assembly, protesting the situation and the ongoing confrontation on the floor of the House.
CM defends Labour Day session
Chief Minister Mann pushed back against the Opposition’s allegations and criticism, stressing that the special session was meant to honour workers on Labour Day and should have remained focused on that purpose.
“The session began on a positive note for May Day, but Congress always finds excuses to walk out,” Mann said, taking a direct swipe at the Opposition benches.
Political backdrop adds to tension
The Labour Day session, called by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, was intended to mark International Labour Day and recognise the contribution of Punjab’s working class. However, it unfolded amid heightened political tension, coming just days after seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, including six from Punjab, resigned and joined the BJP.
