David Furnish shares changes in Elton John marriage in rare admission
David Furnish and Elton John have been together since 1993 and held a civil partnership in 2005, before finally tying the knot in 2014. Their relationship has always been praised as a powerful duo, but they've remainedsomewhat private about the ins and outs of their lives throughout their decades together. However, David has now shown a snippet of his life with Elton in a sweet admission of how their marriage has changed since having children.
Their children, Zachary and Elijah, who were born via surrogacy, are 15 and 13 years old, and helped shape their already happy marriage, especially as they've seen them grow over the years. David has praised his two teen boys and admitted that he and Elton are "very conscious" of the example they're setting. He noted that the "sense of responsibility" of the two has strengthened their marriage.
Speaking to Out.com, David said: "That sense of responsibility has strengthened our marriage and sharpened our purpose. The work we do to build a safer, more equitable world, it's personal. It's about the future our children, and all children, will inherit."
On that, he recognised that the work they both do in raising money to end the AIDS epidemic is still ongoing, adding that he wants to see a world where LBGTQ+ people can live "openly and safely everywhere". He said: "Elton and I have been incredibly fortunate in life, but our greatest achievement would be helping to build a world where the next generation doesn't have to fight the same battles we did to be accepted. That's what keeps us going."
He encouraged people that the fight "is not over", and he and Elton have made it their mission to focus on their fundraising towards keeping people on HIV treatment, expanding access to prevention tools like PrEP and protecting LGBTQ+ communities.
David has been speaking openly in recent weeks about supporting his husband and the pair working further to keep their focus on their charitable work strong. However, there has been a notable change since Elton faced health challenges which stopped him from touring after losing sight in his right eye in the summer of 2024.
Speaking to Variety, David issued an update and said: "He's great. He's battling on. He's keeping busy and moving forward. He's happy being at home as a family with our sons. That's why he came off the road. We really love parenting, we love our family, and we love being together, and that's everything for us."
He spoke ahead of their annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party to celebrate the Oscars on Sunday evening.
