DK Shivakumar & Siddaramaiah Hold ‘Power Breakfast’ As Transition Talks Advance

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sat down for a brief breakfast meeting on Friday, a gathering that carried far more political weight than its casual setting suggested. According to senior Congress sources, the leaders discussed the timeline and framework for a planned transition of power, which the party wants to finalise by March or April 2026. With the Congress keen to maintain stability in one of its strongest states, the meeting marks another step in shaping a carefully managed leadership shift.

Breakfast Meeting Sends a Message of Unity

A photograph showing the two leaders sharing a traditional Karnataka breakfast of upma, idli and kesari bath was circulated soon after the meeting. Party insiders say the image was released deliberately to project unity at a time when the political conversation is centred on who will lead the state government next. The warm optics were meant to reassure cadres that both leaders remain aligned, even as discussions intensify behind closed doors.

Sources said the meeting focused on ironing out the details of what is informally being called the Shivakumar–Siddaramaiah compromise formula. The arrangement outlines how Shivakumar could take charge in early 2026 while ensuring that Siddaramaiah’s tenure concludes without internal upheaval.

Congress Keen on a Smooth Handover

The Congress leadership is said to be extremely cautious about avoiding public rifts in Karnataka. Siddaramaiah remains one of the party’s most experienced leaders, and any sudden decision to replace him could alienate his sizeable support base. As a result, senior figures want a transition that feels orderly, coordinated and respectful of both leaders’ standing within the organisation.

Until the handover takes place, Shivakumar will continue as Deputy Chief Minister. This allows the administration to function normally while giving the party enough time to prepare for a controlled change in the top post.

Why Shivakumar May Agree to the Formula

Sources indicate that Shivakumar is likely to accept the transition timeline for several practical reasons. A cabinet reshuffle is expected to expand his loyalists’ presence in government, and he is set to retain his position as Karnataka Congress president. Party insiders also acknowledge that Shivakumar does not currently have the numerical strength to force a change on his own, making a negotiated agreement the most favourable outcome for him.

Leaders involved in the discussions believe this route offers Shivakumar the clearest path to becoming Chief Minister without risking instability within the government or the party.
