Donald Trump shows true feelings towards Bad Bunny as he skips Super Bowl LX
President Donald Trump has voiced his strong disapproval of Bad Bunny's selection for the Super Bowl halftime show, declaring it a "terrible choice", though he won't be in attendance to see the performance.
Trump was present at last season's Super Bowl in New Orleans and joined his granddaughter, Kai Trump, at the CFP National Championship Game earlier this year. A keen sports enthusiast, the president has also made appearances at the Ryder Cup, the US Open final and various UFC events throughout his second term in office.
Nevertheless, Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction with both Green Day and Bad Bunny's involvement in the Super Bowl entertainment. After declaring himself "anti-them," the president confirmed he would be skipping the NFL's showpiece event in Santa Clara, California.
"I'm anti-them. I think it's a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible," Trump told the New York Post. Yet despite his criticism of the performers, Trump maintained that the primary reason for his absence was simply the distance involved.
"It's just too far away. I would. I've [gotten] great hands [at] the Super Bowl. They like me," Trump continued. "I would go if, you know, it was a little bit shorter."
This isn't the first time Trump has criticised the talent selection, having previously lambasted the NFL and Apple Music over Bad Bunny's appointment last year. "I've never heard of him," Trump remarked to Newsmax's Greg Kelly.
"I don't know who he is, I don't know why they're doing it - it's, like, crazy. They blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it's absolutely ridiculous."
Despite Trump's unfamiliarity with Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican star has been vocally critical of the former president and his administration. Bad Bunny ranks among the world's most popular artists, commanding a massive Spanish-speaking audience alongside a diverse fan base.
When launching his world tour, Bad Bunny omitted US dates over concerns that ICE officers might attend. Speaking to i-D Magazine last year, Bad Bunny explained: "There were many reasons why I didn't show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate - I've performed there many times. All of (the shows) have been successful. But there was the issue of - like, f------ ICE could be outside (my concert). And it's something that we were talking about and very concerned about."
ICE will also have a presence at the Super Bowl, conducting enforcement operations. Whilst the agency has encountered widespread protests throughout the US, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed to TMZ Sports: "Our mission remains unchanged."
With federal officers positioned in the Bay Area, attention will focus on Bad Bunny during the halftime performance. The artist dropped a Trump-critical track last year entitled 'Nuevayol' which featured an imitated Trump voice.
"I want to apologise to the immigrants in America. This country is nothing without the immigrants," the voice can be heard saying. "This country is nothing without Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Cubans."
