'Earth crack' bridge that's world's highest and cost £216.8million
A bridge in China that opened last year is the highest in the world and cost more than £200million to build. Huajiang Canyon Bridge is a vast alpine suspension bridge that stretches over the deep Huajiang Canyon and the Beipan River that passes through it the country's Guizhou province.
The canyon is often referred to as the "Earth Crack", with its precipitous drops on both sides meeting at the bottom to form what looks like a fissure in the planet's crust. The project had various goals, including boosting the economy of what has historically been a poor and remote mountainous region. It also reduced what was a two-hour journey through treacherous mountain roads to just two minutes, CNN reports.
The structure broke records, with the highest bridge deck above the ground or river globally, approximately 2,083 feet up from the base of the canyon.
The span between its two towers (4,660ft) is also the longest ever built in a mountainous area, as per BBC News.
The top deck features four lanes for vehicle traffic, with two in each direction. And while this deck can't be used by pedestrians, there is one below it specifically for them.
Parts of it are made of glass, allowing thrill seekers to look at the staggering drop directly beneath their feet. It's part of what has made the bridge such draw for tourists.
Visitors can also bungee jump from a specially-built platform. Other standout elements also include Interstellar Coffee, the bridge's stunning glass-walled cafe which is perched on top of one of the towers.
You can get a a high-speed glass elevator with 360-degree views up there, and it only takes one minute to reach the top.
Construction began in 2022 and took just three-and-a-half years. It opened to traffic in September, 2025.
The cost of the project was reported to be around two billion yuan (£216.8million).
