Viral Video Shows Harsh Commuting Reality

The video, captioned 'Daily struggles of a Mumbaikar', reportedly filmed at Andheri station on January 20, captures chaotic scenes on a crowded platform. Commuters can be seen attempting to jump onto a train even before it comes to a complete halt. Once the train stops, disorder breaks out as people rush to enter the compartments, pushing and shoving in a desperate attempt to secure space.

In one striking moment, two female police constables are seen assisting women who are hanging partially outside a compartment, trying to help them board safely. The visuals have highlighted the risks associated with overcrowded local trains and the everyday dangers faced by Mumbai’s working population.

Public Reaction Highlights Safety Concerns

The clip has triggered strong reactions online, with many users expressing shock and concern. Several people pointed out the dangers of daily travel on Mumbai local trains and questioned why such scenes continue to be accepted as normal. One user wrote, “Can you IMAGINE? On average, 7 people lose their lives in Mumbai local trains everyday. This is glorified as the ‘Spirit of Mumbai’.”

Another comment described the video as “55 seconds of what millions experience every single day”, referring to crowded platforms, rushing trains and the relentless pace of city life. Others described the scenes as pure “Chaos and Speed”, while some called commuter life in Mumbai “extremely tough”.

Debate Over ‘Spirit Of Mumbai’

The video has also reignited debate around the idea of the so-called “Spirit of Mumbai”. While some view the resilience of commuters as admirable, others strongly disagreed with romanticising hardship. One user criticised the narrative, saying, “You want to romanticise misery and drudgery as music? The Spirit of Mumbai has really possessed you.”

Several people shared personal experiences of travelling on overcrowded local trains. One commuter recalled trying it once and never again, describing the experience as suffocating and deeply uncomfortable. Comparisons were also drawn with traffic congestion in other cities, with some stating that even notorious traffic conditions elsewhere did not match the intensity seen in the video.

Calls For Better Facilities And Accountability

Some users questioned the lack of accountability and asked what rights commuters have when forced to risk their lives daily. One comment read, “Boarding a moving train… risking our lives just to reach work and home. What are our rights? Who do we even ask for help? This should not be normal.”

At the same time, a few voices pointed out that efforts are underway to improve Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure. These users highlighted ongoing and planned railway and metro expansion projects, expressing hope that congestion may ease gradually in the future.

A Daily Struggle For Millions

The viral video and the intense discussion around it underline how commuting in Mumbai remains a daily struggle for millions. Despite ongoing development plans, overcrowded local trains continue to pose serious safety risks. Until long-term solutions take effect, countless commuters in India’s financial capital will continue to navigate dangerous conditions just to get to work and back home each day.
