Hisar layer collects over 20K matchboxes in 11 years
Hisar : While most people love to explore famous landmarks or eateries when visiting new cities, Hisar-based advocate Mohit Choudhary prefers hunting for matchboxes. A resident of Defence Colony, Hisar, the 33-year-old lawyer proudly calls himself not only an advocate but also a phillumenist — a collector of matchboxes.
Mohit's passion began about 11 years ago during his postgraduate studies in Political Science at Punjab University, Chandigarh.
"Several phillumenists asked me to bring them matchboxes from Chandigarh. That's how I developed the interest," he recalls. Since then, Mohit collected more than 20,000 matchboxes, ranging from local varieties to rare international ones.
For Mohit, it's more than just a hobby. "Many matchboxes carry messages — some reflect patriotism, others showcase cultural themes or pay tribute to the armed forces. Collecting these feels meaningful," he says.
His search for matchboxes often leads him to discover other unique aspects of the places he visits. Mohit points out that while Punjab doesn't offer much variety, states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh have a rich range.
Mohit is also an active member of ‘ Matchbox Exchange India ', a Facebook group that connects phillumenists across the country. Through this platform, collectors exchange matchboxes from different regions.
"From Hisar, I can easily collect matchboxes from southern and eastern India, and in return, I send them varieties from here," he explains. Several WhatsApp groups dedicated to the hobby also help enthusiasts stay connected.
