Honour Killing: Young Woman Performs ‘Marriage’ Rituals With Lover’s Body, Demands Justice
In a deeply disturbing case of an alleged honour killing from Maharashtra’s Nanded district, a young woman carried out symbolic marriage rituals on the body of her boyfriend after he was brutally murdered allegedly by her own father and brothers who opposed their inter-caste relationship .
The victim, 25-year-old Saksham Tate, and 21-year-old Aanchal Mamidwar had been together for nearly three years. Saksham was known to her family, having once been close friends with Aanchal’s brother, Himesh. Both Saksham and Himesh had criminal histories, police confirmed.
According to investigators, the situation spiraled after Aanchal’s father, Ganesh (also known as Gajanan) Mamidwar, discovered the relationship and strongly opposed it due to caste differences. What began as disapproval soon escalated into violence.

On the evening of November 27, Saksham was standing with friends in Nanded’s Juna Ganj area when a heated confrontation broke out between him and Himesh. Police said Himesh allegedly fired a gun during the fight, with the bullet piercing Saksham’s ribs. Moments later, he struck Saksham’s head with a tile, killing him on the spot. Police arrested Himesh, his brother Sahil, and their father Gajanan shortly after the attack.
The next morning, as Saksham’s family prepared for his final rites, a grief-stricken Aanchal arrived at the house and made a shocking declaration she wanted to marry him despite his death. Eyewitnesses told PTI that she applied turmeric and vermilion to his body, performing the symbolic rituals through tears.
“Even after his death, I will remain his,” she said. “I want justice. I want the accused to be hanged.”
Aanchal also claimed that her family had repeatedly threatened to kill Saksham because of caste differences. “My family often threatened to kill Saksham, and now my father and brothers, Himesh and Sahil, have done it. I want the accused to be hanged,” she said. She further stated that she intends to stay in Saksham’s house from now on.
Police have filed charges against six individuals under sections related to murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Arms Act. The investigation is ongoing.
