Ian Huntley has died, less than a week after being attacked in a prison workshop by a fellow inmate. The Ministry of Justice confirmed he died at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary this morning.

After his death a Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "The murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman remains one of the most shocking and devastating cases in our nation's history, and our thoughts are with their families." The Soham killer was attacked on Thursday, February 26, at the high security prison in County Durham, HMP Frankland. Following the incident, which reportedly left the Soham killer "lying in a pool of blood", he was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. The double murderer was treated for serious head injuries, after the ambush allegedly left him with his head "split in two". Huntley was convicted in 2003 of killing 10-year-olds Holly and Jessica after they left a family barbecue to buy sweets in Soham. He denied their murder. Huntley had survived previous attacks in the same prison, including an incident in 2010 which saw another inmate slit his throat.
