Instantly speed up your Wi-Fi by moving router away from 1 item in the house
Slow internet never happens at a good time. Whether you're on a work call, watching your favourite series, or scrolling on your phone, laggy connections can be frustrating.
We all know the router's position plays a role in how strong and reliable the Wi-Fi signal is. If it's tucked away in a corner, hidden behind furniture or placed inside a cupboard, the signal can easily be blocked or weakened by obstacles.
This is because they compete for the same airwaves as your WiFi, which can create a jam and lead to interference. This issue is particularly common when Bluetooth devices operate on the same 2.4GHz frequency band as your Wi-Fi.
"Many everyday devices can interfere with your WiFi signal, especially those that use radio waves or generate electromagnetic noise," noted Virgin Media.
This is common with Bluetooth speakers, which can clash with Wi-Fi signals and slow down your connection.
Redditors debated the topic, with one writing: "Moving my plugged-in speaker closer and farther away from my router made the interference increase and decrease. Found noticeable interference placing the speaker within 1 feet of the router."
A second asked: "My WiFi speed decreases drastically when I'm using Bluetooth headphones. Does anyone else have this problem?"
A third claimed: "You probably hate to hear it, but wired peripherals definitely don't have this problem."
Bluetooth speakers aren't the only potential culprits. Experts revealed that devices such as baby monitors, cordless phones or even microwaves can interfere with the signals, coming between you and your favourite Netflix show.
Try to keep the router at least a few feet away from any electronic devices to avoid any risk of your signal being interrupted.
Tech experts also recommend keeping your router in a central location, away from thick walls, and raising it from the floor, so that it is not blocked by furniture.
