JD(U) announces schedule for national president election
Patna: JD(U) announced the schedule for the election of its national president on Monday, the day the party’s current organisational head and CM Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Nitish is likely to contest for the party’s top post once again, insiders in the JD(U) told TOI on Monday.
“Nomination papers for the election of the JD(U) national president can be filed till March 22. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on March 23, while March 24 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. If more than one person remains in the contest after withdrawal of candidature, the polling will be held on March 27,” JD(U) national general secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan said while releasing the election schedule.

Nitish first took over as the JD(U) president on April 10, 2016, succeeding Sharad Yadav. He was re-elected unopposed for a second three-year term in Oct 2019 but stepped down on Dec 27, 2020, handing the reins to the party’s then national general secretary and former IAS officer RCP Singh.
Nitish returned to the party’s top post on Dec 29, 2023. He remains the national president, though Sanjay Kumar Jha was appointed as the party’s national working president in mid-2024 to assist with organisational duties.
In Dec 2023, Nitish was elected unanimously at the party’s national executive meeting in Delhi to lead the JD(U) through the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party won 12 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Bihar.
Moreover, the JD(U)-led NDA secured a landslide victory in the 2025 Bihar assembly elections , winning 202 out of 243 seats, under the leadership of Nitish.
Meanwhile, the CM is scheduled to begin the fourth leg of his ‘Samriddhi Yatra’ on March 17 from Bhagalpur and Banka districts, which will culminate on March 20 in Gaya and Aurangabad districts.
