JD(U) offers security to Rohini; RJD, Lalu family remain silent

Patna: The JD(U) on Friday extended full support to RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s Singapore-based daughter Rohini Acharya, a day after she called for firm measures to safeguard women’s rights, urging the Bihar govt to ensure that “every daughter feels safe in her parental home”. The RJD and the Lalu family have maintained a complete silence, even as the issue has taken on sharp political overtones.

Reacting to Rohini’s public “cry for help,” the JD(U) said CM Nitish Kumar’s govt prioritises the safety of women and would consider her concerns seriously. “We will definitely take note of her remarks as ensuring safety and rights for daughters remains our foremost priority. If we were able to win elections, it was the female class who played the biggest role,” JD(U)’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Kumar Jha told the reporters on Friday.

Referring to Nitish’s two-decade-long governance, Jha, who is also the party’s national working president, said his govt ensured security for all. “We have never made personal comments on any family, but when it comes to the rights of a daughter, Nitish’s work in Bihar stands out,” he said.

JD(U) MLC and chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said the govt would provide full security to Rohini if she sought assistance. “How shameful that a daughter who donated her kidney to her parents taking no care of her children, is now pleading for safety in her parental home. We will deploy women security forces for her protection once we receive a message from her side that she is in distress, wants security, and is coming on that flight,” he told reporters in Patna. “Bihar ki beti hai to usko nyay nahin denge,” he added.

Taking aim at Lalu’s long-standing slogan of social justice, he asked, “Agar beti ko nyay nahi dijiyega to samajik nyay ki baat farjiwada hai.” The RJD refused to respond and the Lalu family continues to remain silent.

Pointing to discord within her own family, Rohini wrote on X, “Every daughter has the right to grow up with the assurance that her parental home is a safe place, where she can return without any fear, guilt, shame, or having to explain herself to anyone.” Calling this not merely an “administrative duty” but a crucial step to prevent exploitation and harassment, she posted the message on Thursday.

Rohini, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Saran, made headlines last month after leaving her parents’ home, severing ties with her family and announcing her exit from politics. She alleged that a woman was humiliated, abused and threatened with a slipper in her presence. “I faced insult as I didn’t compromise with my self-respect,” she wrote in a post on November 16, adding, “Kisi ghar me Rohini-jaisi beti-bahan paida na ho.”
