Karkala: A fire that had been appearing sporadically over the last five days near Swaraj Maidan in the Ramasamudra area spread extensively on Tuesday, March 3. Municipal council workers and fire department personnel struggled significantly to bring the blaze under control.

To prevent the fire from spreading further, two municipal water tankers and two fire engines were deployed in a continuous operation.

The firefighting efforts were led by Municipal Environmental Engineer Laila Thomas and a team of officials, alongside Fire Department Assistant Station Officer Chandrashekhar and personnel including Rupesh, Ganesh, Dinesh, Muzambir, and Bhimappa.

Former municipal member Vinnibold D'Souza expressed suspicion that the fire might have been caused by individuals loitering in the area and carelessly discarding lit cigarettes or beedis.

The operation to extinguish the flames lasted from 12:00 PM on Tuesday until late evening.

Officials noted that any delay could have allowed the fire to reach residential areas, potentially leading to a major disaster. The fire has now been completely brought under control through their sustained efforts.
