Land acquired to fix blind spot on Periyanaickenpalayam flyover in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: The national highways (NH) wing of the state highways department has acquired land to rectify a blind spot on the Periyanaickenpalayam flyover on Mettupalayam Road.

The flyover at Periyanaickenpalayam Junction on the NH-181, which was built at a cost of Rs 115.56 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024.

There is a design flaw at the junction where the service road merges with the main road. Vehicles travelling on the service road towards Mettupalayam are forced to take a sharp turn to enter the flyover's down ramp, which can case accidents. A representation was made to the Prime Minister’s Office by the secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, K Kathirmathiyon, in January this year highlighting the flaws of the flyover. The state govt appointed an inquiry officer on Sept 30 to look into the issue.

The state govt has sanctioned Rs 7.4 crores for rectifying the blind spot. Officials said a piece of land measuring 7.5 cents was acquired at Rs 1.02 crore. The buildings on the acquired land were cleared to construct a service road for a stretch of 400 metres that would merge with the main carriageway of the flyover.

According to an NH official, “Initially, the buildings were assumed to be encroachments, and only later was it revealed as patta land. Land acquisition procedures have been completed.” The rectification work is expected to be completed in the next two months, he added.
