The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case against two officials of the Life Insurance Corporation of India in connection with an alleged ₹4 lakh bribe demand linked to a ₹40 lakh death claim .

What the Case Is About

The accused officers, identified as C Kadam and M Patil, were posted as Field Officers or Development Officers at the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar unit of LIC in Maharashtra. They have been booked under provisions related to criminal conspiracy and demand of undue advantage under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The case relates to the accidental death of a policyholder on August 6 last year. The deceased had taken six LIC policies and had named his sister and mother as nominees. In October 2025, the nominees’ family member submitted the required applications to claim the insurance amount.

Alleged Demand for Bribe

According to the complaint, the two officers visited the family’s home on January 20 to verify documents needed for processing the claim. More than a month later, on February 23, one of the officers allegedly sent a WhatsApp message demanding ₹4 lakh, which is about 10 percent of the total claim amount.

The message reportedly stated that the money would be shared between both officials. The family, disturbed by the alleged demand, approached the CBI and filed a complaint.

Verification and Investigation

The CBI conducted a verification exercise on February 24 in the presence of independent witnesses. During this process, the complainant reportedly met one of the accused in Beed.

As per the recorded conversation mentioned in the FIR, the officials allegedly asked for ₹1 lakh to be paid within two days. The remaining ₹3 lakh was reportedly to be handed over after the insurance claim amount was credited to the nominees’ account.

Based on the complaint and the verification findings, the CBI formally registered the case. Investigators are now examining electronic evidence, including WhatsApp messages and recorded conversations.

Probe Underway

The investigation is ongoing, and officials are reviewing all available material to establish the sequence of events. The case has raised concerns about accountability and transparency in the handling of insurance claims, especially in situations where families are already facing emotional and financial stress.
