BHOPAL: Salman, the accused in the six-year-old girl rape case, was injured after trying to escape by seizing a sub-inspector’s gun and firing at the police, SP Raisen Ashutosh Gupta said on Friday.

He was arrested in the Gandhinagar area and was being transported to Raisen when the police vehicle broke down near Kiratnagar village in Bhojpur. He was shot in the leg in retaliatory fire and later taken to Jai Prakash Hospital in Bhopal for first aid.

The six-year-old victim from Goharganj is currently fighting for her life at AIIMS Bhopal, where doctors have described her condition as critical.

The 23-year-old accused, a resident of Sehore district, had come to Gauharganj to work as a labourer. Police said that he allegedly lured the girl—who was playing outside her home—with chocolates, took her to a nearby forest, raped her, and then fled.

When the child did not return home, her family began searching for her. A local resident had reportedly seen her walking with Salman, leading to fears that something was wrong.

After a frantic search, the girl was found crying and covered in blood in a nearby forest.

Over 300 police personnel were deployed to track down the accused, using drones and posting flyers on public vehicles.

Following the incident, tensions escalated in the area. Angry members of right-wing organisations launched protests demanding Salman's immediate arrest and hanging.

On Saturday, dozens of people blocked the Jaipur–Jabalpur highway, raising slogans and expressing their outrage. Protests grew even larger on Sunday as the accused had not yet been arrested at that time.
