Major £300m UK railway line could be extended after 1m passengers in first year
The Northumberland Line, a £300 million project restoring passenger services to former mining communities in the north-east, could be extended after nearly one million journeys were made in its first year of operation.
Reopened on December 15, 2024, under the Government's Restoring Your Railways scheme, the 29-kilometre line has far exceeded expectations. The route has cut the journey time from Ashington to Newcastle city centre from over an hour by bus to just 35 minutes by train, providing a fast, reliable alternative for commuters, students, and local residents.
Northern, the line's operator, reported that more than 920,000 journeys had already been made by the end of 2025, with the millionth expected in early January 2026, New Civil Engineer reported.
The service currently calls at Newcastle and Manors in the city, as well as new stations at Seaton Delaval, Newsham, Blyth Bebside, and Ashington. Work continues at Bedlington and Northumberland Park stations, due to open in early 2026.
Encouraged by the line's early success, Northumberland County Council has submitted a bid for funding to extend the route to Newbiggin on the coast.
Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: "The success of the Northumberland Line has far exceeded our expectations and shown there is huge demand for rail travel beyond what is currently provided. We want to build on this success and extend the line to Newbiggin."
The council has put forward its priorities to the North East Combined Authority through the Transport for City Regions programme, requesting funding to develop an outline business case for the extension.
Sanderson said he is "extremely hopeful" the funding bid will be successful.
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness hailed the line's first year as "absolutely amazing," noting its impact on daily travel and student commutes.
She also highlighted a £10.9 million investment to complete Northumberland Park Station, which will further expand the line's reach and integrate fares with Metro services.
Operational data highlights the line's efficiency as trains have covered more than 610,000 kilometres, 110 drivers and 84 conductors have been trained, punctuality stands at 92%, and 82% of passengers report satisfaction with their journeys.
