'Masterpiece' crime thriller streaming free as fans 'binge watch'

A "gripping" crime thriller based loosely on a true story has left viewers feeling "uncomfortable" - and it's currently available to watch online.

The Crowded Room is a miniseries that premiered in 2023 featuring Tom Holland, Amanda Seyfried and Will Chase. It charts a young man's detention following a violent crime and an investigator determined to reveal the truth.

The crime thriller follows Tom Holland's character Danny as he unravels dark secrets about his past, and it is available to stream on Apple TV. It can also be streamed on Prime Video with the Apple TV add on.

It is teased: "A psychological thriller set in Manhattan in the summer of 1979, when a young man is arrested for a shocking crime-and an unlikely investigator must solve the mystery behind it."

The Crowded Room is adapted from Daniel Keyes' non fiction 1981 book The Minds of Billy Milligan as many viewers may not realise it is in fact loosely based on a true story - that of Billy Milligan who was acquitted of serious crimes due to a claim of multiple personality disorder, reports the Mirror. Author Keyes claimed Milligan had multiple personalities from the time he was five.

Despite launching in 2023, numerous fans are only now stumbling upon the miniseries as they describe it as a "brilliant watch".

Enthusiastic feedback flooded Rotten Tomatoes, though critics held contrasting opinions. One viewer wrote: "One of the best shows in apple tv hands down."

Another commented: "This series was fantastic. The first few episodes can be hard and uncomfortable to watch, but if you stick to it, it will make alot of sense. The series was gripping and the acting was amazing."

A third remarked: "I think this show its nothing but a piece of art. Great acting and the way this story get your full attention its just mind blowing. Tom Holland did an amazing job!".

A fourth responded: "Binge worthy! It takes a few episodes to see what's happening. Then it shocks you, sinks its teeth into you and never lets go."

Another wrote: "The Crowded Room is an absolute masterpiece, showcasing Tom Holland in one of his most powerful and emotionally gripping performances."

Meanwhile on TikTok, one true crime enthusiast recently described it as a "gripping psychological thriller" stating: "This psychological thriller series is on Prime Video's series spotlight at the minute and it deserves to be there because it's an absolutely brilliant series."

Another praised it as "brilliant" whilst a third confessed they "binged it".

Additionally, a documentary about Billy Milligan can be found on Netflix entitled Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan.
