'Masterpiece' Tom Cruise war film based on best-selling book now streaming on Amazon Prime
It's a war film like no other and this overlooked action blockbuster has gained a cult following since its release after a full change of name and is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
Edge Of Tomorrow, starring action stalwart Tom Cruise alongside Brit Emily Blunt, released in 2014 but failed to find big box office success despite its star cast.
The action film is based on best-selling book All You Need Is Kill, a Japanese science fiction story widely regarded as one of the best light novels ever written.
Originally called Live Die Repeat before studios changed it to Edge Of Tomorrow, the film has actually been renamed back to its original title and has slowly begun to attract a loyal fanbase.
The action romp is a war film mostly set in the UK which sees the world invaded by aliens - but with a Groundhog Day style twist.
As Warner Bros pitches it: "An alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission.
"Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again...and again.
"But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Vrataski take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy."
Viewers absolutely love it. One IMDB user said: "It's hard to compromise how a film of such similar plot development to Groundhog Day can be considered to be such a great action movie, but like the events in this film, you just have to see it to believe it.
"Edge of Tomorrow is honestly my favorite Tom Cruise movie, and when you have such a great track record like Cruise, that's really saying something.
"The film is phenomenal, as with Groundhog Day it follows a similar plot, but it certainly has a different way at going at the themes it develops. Cruise and Blunt make a terrific pair in this action/sci-fi/thriller and the film is nothing short of brilliant.
"The special effects are mesmerising, the look of the film daunting, and yet nostalgic and fully realised. I love the development of the world we find our characters in, and all the aliens it involves. I love nearly every aspect of this film, and although on the surface it may not seem original, it certainly feels that way. In the end, Edge of Tomorrow is a must see action flick that will have audiences on the edge of their seats, and is a must see for any sci-fi or Cruise fan in general. My Rating: 10/10."
Another said: "Everything about this film screams greatness, from the creative fantastic story to the incredible special effects especially us lucky ones who also get the 3D effects!!
"Tom Cruise was phenomenal. As usual, he's so underrated as an actor and the fact he does his own stunts shows his dedication to his craft. Emily Blunt was great as well actually everyone was top notch. We've seen this film at least a dozen times and it gets better every time. If for some strange reason you haven't had the pleasure of seeing this do yourself a HUGE favour and watch this masterpiece. It's a top 10 sci-fi action film of all time!!"
A third added: "This is one of my favorite sci-fi movies I think I've ever seen. The acting is great, the story is heartfelt, unbelievably interesting, and well paced. For such a gritty movie, there is a perfect amount of humour that doesn't make everything feel less intense."
Another said: "What a clever and entertaining thrill ride from start to finish. This is not any old Tom Cruise movie. He is a coward here. A lame duck. And he needs to get trained. By Emily Blunt! Yes, she the master of drama and romance in her first real action movie. She is amazingly ripped here and what a character to play. I think her best role in her career."
Live Die Repeat/Edge Of Tomorrow is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
