The Met Office has issued yellow snow and ice warnings across 57 regions in Northern England and Scotland for tomorrow. It warned that snow and ice could lead to injuries from slips and falls, while icy patches may form on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

In Scotland, showers affecting higher ground on Thursday are forecast to push down to lower levels this evening and overnight.

Because the snow will fall in showers, accumulations are expected to be patchy. Some low-lying areas could see 1-2cm by Friday morning on February 13, while hills above 300 metres could see up 5cm of powder, with up to 10cm possible in a few isolated spots.

As temperatures drop quickly, icy patches could form on untreated roads and pavements, potentially leading to challenging driving conditions.

It warned that some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times, while walkers are urged to be careful on slippery pavements.

Further south across northern England and into the Midlands, including Derbyshire, rain is expected to turn to snow over higher ground on Thursday, before spreading to lower levels later in the evening.

Any significant settling is most likely on high ground, with 2-5cm possible above 200 metres and as much as 10cm in a handful of locations above 300 metres.

The rain and snow are forecast to clear southwards in the early hours of Friday. However, the cold will linger, with clear skies allowing temperatures to fall sharply, increasing the risk of ice.

The Met Office warnings are due to remain in place until midday on Friday.
