Shooting Caught on Camera

The victim, 30-year-old Kanwar Digvijay Singh, popularly known as Rana Balachauria, had organised the tournament and was also scheduled to play. As the match was in progress, gunshots rang out, sending spectators running for cover. The video of the incident was shared on X by Congress leader and former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh, though it could not be independently verified.

Posting the 49-second clip, Pargat Singh wrote, “Punjab’s law and order has hit a new low.” He added that gunfire at a public sporting event reflected a serious breakdown of safety in the state. The same footage was later reposted by several political leaders and party handles.

Rana Balachauria was rushed to Fortis Hospital in Mohali at around 6:05 pm but was declared brought dead. Doctors said he had sustained gunshot injuries to the head and face.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of assailants arrived at the venue in a Mahindra Bolero, opened fire at the teams playing on the field, and fled immediately after the attack. The sudden assault left players and spectators traumatised.

The BJP’s Chandigarh unit also shared the video, alleging a complete collapse of law and order in Punjab. The party pointed to earlier attacks on kabaddi players, including the murders of Sandeep Nangal Ambian and Tejpal Singh, claiming that sportspersons were increasingly becoming soft targets.

In a sharp political attack, the BJP said, “Under Bhagwant Mann’s incompetent leadership and Arvind Kejriwal’s remote-control governance from Delhi, Punjab’s law & order has completely collapsed.”

Police Launch Search Operation

Police have registered a case and launched a search operation to trace the assailants. Officials said multiple teams are working to identify the attackers and establish the motive behind the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
