Motorcycle theft accused dies in police custody

Rajkot: A 25-year-old man accused of motorcycle theft was found dead in police custody in Surendranagar district on Thursday. Police said the deceased was Gajendrasinh Zala, a resident of Zinzuvada in Patdi taluka.

Zala had been detained by the local crime branch on Wednesday for allegedly stealing a motorcycle. According to officials, he had used his shirt to hang himself from a window grille inside the lockup.

He was found hanged on Thursday morning. Police personnel rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body was sent for a postmortem.

Investigators alleged that Zala had admitted during questioning that he had stole more than one motorcycle. Police have launched an inquiry into the custodial death. Further action will follow based on the postmortem report and investigation findings.
