The 26 November attack continues to be remembered as one of the darkest and most devastating chapters in Mumbai’s history. A total of 166 people were killed, and more than 300 were injured when ten terrorists from Pakistan executed a series of coordinated strikes across the city.

A Night That Changed Mumbai Forever

Armed militants from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba infiltrated Mumbai by sea, arriving stealthily under the cover of darkness. Once ashore, the attackers spread out across multiple high-profile and crowded locations, turning the city into a battlefield.

Targets included:

  • The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

  • The Oberoi Trident Hotel

  • CST (CSMT) Railway Station

  • Nariman House (Chabad House)

The scale, precision and sheer brutality of the assault left Mumbai shaken to its core and triggered global outrage. For nearly 60 hours, the city watched in horror as security forces battled the terrorists room by room, floor by floor, in some of the most intense counterterror operations India had witnessed.

  • Mumbai Police Salute the Fallen

Earlier in the day, the Mumbai Police took to X (formerly Twitter) to honour the courage of the personnel who gave their lives protecting the city. Their message read:
"In the longest night, bravery burned the brightest. Honouring the courage that rises, steady and bright, guiding us forward."

The city paid homage to the brave officers who laid down their lives, including:

    • Hemant Karkare – Chief of the Mumbai ATS

    • Vijay Salaskar – Encounter specialist

    • Ashok Kamte – Additional Commissioner of Police

    • Tukaram Ombale – The brave constable who caught Ajmal Kasab, sacrificing his life in the process

These names remain symbols of extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable danger.

A Day of Reflection, Grief and Resolve

As wreaths were laid and candles lit, Mumbai collectively remembered not just the officers but also the innocent civilians passengers, hotel staff, tourists, and local residents whose lives were cut short that dreadful night.

The tributes at CSMT served as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the city and the undying spirit of its people. Sixteen years later, the legacy of 26/11 is not only one of grief, but also of unity, bravery, and an enduring commitment to fight against terrorism.

Mumbai remembers. Mumbai stands tall. Mumbai never forgets.
