New higher education dept to stress on research, innovation

Patna: The newly created department of higher education in Bihar will lay greater emphasis on strengthening the existing research institutions and language academies in the state. With a separate budget, the department will work to improve the state’s higher education institutions and ensuring capacity building of teachers and students, said higher education director N K Agrawal.

The director told this newspaper that the newly created department of higher education aims to improve the quality of university and technical education, promote research and innovation, and ensure that education is employment-oriented for the state’s youth. The creation of this dedicated department, previously tagged with primary and secondary education, is a strategic move to focus specifically on post-secondary reforms and is a core part of the state govt’s goal to create one crore jobs in the next five years.

The primary objective of this new department include improvement of academic standards in state universities, strengthen research and innovation ecosystems, develop technical and vocational pathways and faster implementation of reforms and targeted funding for higher education institutions.

Besides, the department would also promote employment-linked curricula aligned with industrial needs in sectors like engineering, healthcare, management, and agriculture and expanding vocational and skill-integrated degree programmes.

All the existing eight language academies, including Bihar Hindi Granth Academy , Maithili Academy, Magahi Academy, Bangla Academy, Sanskrit Academy, Bhojpuri Academy, Angika Academy, and the South Indian Languages Academy have been brought under the control of the new department. Furthermore, the govt has also initiated the process for the constitution of two new vernacular academies, Prakrit and Pali academies, under the administrative control of the new department.

Agrawal further pointed out that all the institutions engaged in research work of university level in social, economic, scientific and technical fields, like A N Sinha Institute of Social Studies, Bihar Research Society, K P Jayaswal Research Institute, Jajjiwan Ram Institute of Parliamentary Studies and others will function under the administrative control of the new department. The department will strive to improve the functioning of all these organisations, he added.
