Newquay LIVE: Coastguard helicopter hovers above town as rescue team swarms area

A coastguard helicopter was spotted hovering above the coastal area of Newquay on Monday evening, with an eye-witness reporting a "big police presence" in the area. The helicopter was first reported to our sister site CornwallLive at just before 6pm, and was still hovering at 7pm, a flight tracker site showed.

The helicopter was using powerful light to illuminate parts of the water and beach, it is reported, seemingly focusing around the Towan Beach area. In a statement, the coastguard said they were responding to reports ""of a person possibly in difficulty in the water".
