Nutrient 2/3rds of world don't get enough of for joint health and the 59p-a-day solution
Omega-3 is one of those nutrients many people assume they are getting enough of, yet research suggests otherwise. According to a new studypublished in November 2025, more than three-quarters of the global population are not getting enough omega-3, despite its importance for joint health, inflammation control and everyday mobility.
It's a gap that often goes unnoticed, largely because omega-3 can be difficult to consume in adequate amounts through a modern diet alone. One supplement gaining attention to help with this, however, is Dr Vegan's Omega 3.
For a one-off purchase, it costs £21.99 for one pouch, but shoppers will find the best value with the subscription option, where they can get three pouches every 90 days for £53.09, down from £65.97, working out at around 59p per day. Plus, the brand is currently offering a further 15% off with the code 'VOM3', taking the one-off purchase down to £18.70 and the 90-day subscription option to £45.13.
Unlike traditional fish oil supplements, the brand says the Vegan Omega 3 is made from algae, which is a fundamental source of omega-3 in the food chain, offering a plant-based alternative that avoids the environmental impact of industrial fishing. Fish don't actually produce omega-3 themselves, they obtain it from algae they consume.
By sourcing omega-3 directly from algae, supplements like this avoid trawling and seabed damage while providing a cleaner, purer oil. Dr Vegan's formula contains 1,000mg of algae oil per serving, delivering an optimal balance of 300mg DHA and 150mg EPA, the two fatty acids most closely linked with joint comfort, brain health, heart function and vision, the brand says.
Because it is algae-derived, there's no fishy smell or aftertaste, and it avoids the pollutants and toxins that can be found in some fish oils. It's also naturally lower in saturated fats compared to animal-based omega-3 sources, which is important as higher saturated fat intake is associated with raised cholesterol levels.
Dr Vegan says omega-3 is needed in every cell of the body and plays a role in skin health, hormone balance, cognitive function and inflammation management. Dr Vegan's Omega 3 has been recognised by BBC Good Food as a 'Highly Recommended' supplement and is rated 'Excellent' on Trustpilot, with more than 6,000 reviews from customers.
Another option, however, is the Essential Omega-3 for £17.99, down from £23.49, from MyProtein for 250 soft gels. This has a range of benefits, such as being an essential fatty acid, and it is said to be cost effective and convenient.
A second is the Solgar Triple Strength Omega-3 100 Softgel Capsules from Holland and Barrett, costing £62.48. This is described as a 'concentrated omega3 supplement providing Solgar's Triple Strength combination of EPA and DHA to support heart health'.
On Trustpilot, shoppers have rated the Dr Vegan supplements highly. One person, Mike Harrison, said: "It's good for my brain health. The subscription service means I don't run out. Price is competitive. One teensy moan is that the capsules are slightly tacky, and tend to stick to my pill case. But if you don't use a pill case, that won't bother you!"
Mandy Stewart added: "Really helps me and my joints, as I love to regularly work out at the gym. At 54 I've really noticed the difference since taking them."
One person knocked a star off and said: "High quality supplements, one of the few sellers that offer different types of omega-3s together and produced from clean, tank-grown algae. I didn't know there was a hierarchy of omega-3 supplements, but once I learned better, I found that this product offered the best quality/price ratio. Knocked off one star for communication - if a supplement sells out, it's unclear when the stock will be replenished."
Ellie said: "I have now been on this product for two years, and I can't be without it. Highly recommend for anyone who suffers from stiff and painful joints. No fishy taste, and brilliant benefits. I have always found cod liver oil beneficial to my health, but I hated what it was and where it came from. In the past, I have tried other omega-3 substitutes that have never come close or have given me an unhappy tum. This all changed when I tried Dr Vegan's Vegan Omega 3! I have been using this product for a month and can't believe the positive difference in my joints, hair, and skin. It really has taken away my painful and stiff joints, with the added positivity of affecting my sleep in a great way. I have now subscribed, so I never run out!"
