Oscars fury as star's microphone suddenly cut off mid-speech
A heartfelt acceptance moment at the Oscars took an awkward turn when a director's speech was abruptly silenced - leaving viewers stunned and the host scrambling to smooth things over. What should have been a triumphant celebration for short-film artists instead became one of the night's most talked-about mishaps after a microphone was suddenly cut while a winner was still speaking on stage. The chaos unfolded after presenter Kumail Nanjiani revealed that voting in the Best Live Action Short category had produced a rare tie.
The teams behind Two People Exchanging Saliva and The Singers were invited up consecutivley to accept their awards - a moment already unusual before things spiralled further. Director Natalie Musteata delivered an emotional speech first, thanking collaborators and paying tribute to producers including Isabelle Huppert and Julianne Moore. Just as co-director Alexandre Singh began addressing the audience, saying, "And thank you...", the stage lights dimmed and his microphone went dead.
The sudden silence triggered uneasy laughter inside the Dolby Theatre as cameras cut away to host Conan O'Brien, who watched with a strained grin and was seen putting his head in his hands and biting his knuckles.
After a tense pause, the sound returned and Singh resumed, finishing with a pointed message about the value of the arts amid a recent row involving Best Actor nominee Timothée Chalamet's comments about ballet and opera.
"We believe that art can change people's souls," Singh said. "We can change society through art, through creativity, through theater and ballet and also cinema."
Once the winners exited, O'Brien openly called out the production blunder, drawing applause from the audience.
"I just want to say congratulations to both winners. You just ruined 22million Oscar pools. I know we're tight, but to retract a microphone on a man as he's speaking is hilarious. Next up!"
The comedian's attempt to laugh off the incident did little to quell outrage online, where viewers accused organisers of disrespecting the filmmakers' moment.
Posts flooded X as fans blasted the incident. "Yeah, it was smart to kill his mic. Blah blah blah" "wait did they cut their microphone at first this is just a lot" "LET PEOPLE FINISH THEIR SPEECHES #Oscars"
"Alright what happened that they cut the mic & panned to Conan. Was it some kinda gesture. #Oscars" and "Conan laughing at this hiccup with the mic is hilarious."
Earlier in the night, O'Brien referenced backlash from performing arts communities during his opening monologue, joking about heightened security at the event.
"Security is extremely tight tonight. Just gotta mention that," he said, before adding: "I'm told there's concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities."
The camera cut to Chalamet and partner Kylie Jenner laughing in the audience, as O'Brien delivered one final jab - "they're just mad you left out jazz!"
