PUVNL is a joint venture between the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), and a memorandum to supply 85% power to the state was signed with the govt.

Talking to the media on Saturday, PVUNL’s chief executive officer (CEO) A K Sehgal said the installed capacity of the 800 MW unit, which is part of the 3x800 MW capacity in phase-1. “We are now successfully generating around 80% of the installed capacity and Jharkhand is getting nearly 540 MW from this unit,” he said.

In phase-1, the first unit of 800 MW has been set up with an estimated cost of Rs 9,000 crore. “Unit-2 of the same capacity is targeted to be commissioned by March 2026, and unit-3 of phase-1 is likely to be ready in the next fiscal year,” Sehgal said, adding that the 2×800 MW capacity phase-2 is under process.

On the joint venture, Sehgal said, “NTPC holds 74% stake and JBVNL 26% stake, while 85% of the power generated will go to JBVNL. The remaining 15% will go to the Union govt.”

About the plant, he said that it is equipped with the latest technology for suitable high-efficiency operations, an air-cooled condenser for minimal water consumption, and 100% dry ash technology for 100% productive ash usage.

PVUNL, spread over 1,334 acres of land in Patratu of the district, was incorporated in October 2015. NTPC took over the assets of the ailing Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS), which was set up in 1962, for the current project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone on May 25, 2018.

Ziaur Rehman, the head of human resources at PVUNL, said the Banhadi coal block, spread over 1,818 hectares of land in Latehar district, would start coal production in the next fiscal year, and PVUNL signed a loan agreement for Rs 3,300 crore with it for the supply of coal. Currently, the plant is getting coal from the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL).

On PVUNL’s community development, Rehman said various programmes for education, health, skill development, women empowerment, basic infrastructure, and drinking water, amounting to Rs 21.65 crore, have been completed. “Schemes for Rs 14.33 crore are in progress and there are also plans for another Rs 11 crore,” he said.
