Social media users have been left in hysterics after an awkward exchange between a reporter and Congresswoman discussing "King George's" upcoming visit to the US was caught on camera. Speaking outside the US Capitol building as King Charles and Queen Camilla prepare to visit Washington DC at the end of the month, Lauren Boebert, the Representative for Colorado, was asked whether she thought it was "appropriate for King George to meet with members of Congress."

The Donald Trump ally appeared to have no idea that the journalist had just confused the British monarch's name with one of a King who died over 200 years ago, and replied that he would not want to meet with him.

"1776," she answered, referring to the year that the 13 American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain and signed the Declaration of Independence. "I have nothing to do with King George or the Royal Family. I am an American first."

Social media users found the exchange hilarious, with many pointing out that King George II, who was the monarch when the US decided to split from Britain, died in 1820 at the age of 81.

There have been four King George's since then, with the most recent monarch bearing that name, King George VI - Queen Elizabeth II's father, passing in February 1952.

One person wrote: "Why are they talking about King George and what Country is he King of. If they are talking about King Charles III then that proves that the education in America is non-existent and explains why they elected that moron Trump as President."

Another user joked: "He's not available to meet. He died in 1820." A third said: "Who is this reporter? King George has not been alive for a long time. That's embarrassing."

Another person said: "The lack of geopolitical understanding and education with some US politicians is shocking."

Ms Boebert even doubled down on the exchange, responding on X with: "The only King George I recognise already got expelled from this place."e only King George I recognize already got expelled from this place."

This post prompted further amusement from royal fans.
